The Day of Silence started at the University of Virginia in 1996 as a response to a non-violent protest class assignment and the next year it went national with almost 100 colleges participating. Now the movement reaches across the water to as far away as Russia and New Zealand.
Today students middle school through college are making the pledge to be silent for those who have been silenced for years due to how they identify. The Day of Silence brings attention to the silence faced by the LGBTQ+ community and the injustices they have endured for years.
Ending the silence is the first step towards awareness. Awareness is the first step towards addressing these injustices. Think about the voices you ARE NOT hearing today.

I chose to read further into this article because lgbt oppression is a big deal to me. I am lucky to be accepted by my family and friends despite my sexuality, and some people are just not all that lucky. I think that's why this article is so important in society today. Bravo, Alyssa:)
